First of all let us understand what does YOGA actually means.
The word "YOGA" has originated from the Sanskrit word "YOGAM" which literally means - To Unite (or) To become One With
Having direct communion with your inner energies is called YOGA.
And this YOGAM or YOGA can be achieved by practicing its 8 different forms:
(sometime referred to as ASTANGA-YOGA)
- YAMA
- NIYAMA
- AASANA
- PRANAYAMA
- PRATYAHARA
- DHYANA
- DHARANA
- SAMADHI
And other techniques most people are familiar with are
- PRANAYAMA - breathing techniques
- DHYANA - Meditation, which is considered as one of the best technique to achieve the state of YOGA
But unfortunately only the physicality of the YOGA came to the West and these days YOGA has become a general word and everyone getting into bone bending postures started using it without knowing what it actually means. This is the very reason for which YOGA is attributed as if it is just something to do with physical body which isn't the fact.
For physical activity, the right term to use is not YOGA but it is YOGASASNAS or just ASANAS. It is one of the techinque to reach the state of YOGA but not YOGA itself.
Reaching or Achieving the zone of intelligence (or) the space of consiousness which is inside your being is the goal why you have taken the body.
Body is alive or functioning just to reach the space in which you can experience the deep restful awareness, deep peace and ultimate bliss.
If you are trying to look like someone else then there is something seriously wrong in your being.
The uneasiness you created between you and your body is the root cause of your mental disease.
